PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION

The photographic collection of the Finnish Labour Archives illustrates different areas of the social democratic labour movement, such as political, civic and organisational operations, trade union operations and cultural and educational activities. The collection’s images make it possible to view different industrial production processes, labour and its changes, the development of the cityscape and the work for human rights, for example. There are also plenty of personal photos of people who have been influental in the labour movement. The oldest photographs date back to the turn of the 1800s and 1900s.

The collection contains an estimated 1.3 million photographs, a few per cent of which have been digitised. The largest entities include photographs from Demari magazine, the cooperative movement, various workers’ associations and STS-Pankki.

Digitised photographs from the Finnish Labour Archives can be found using the image search in Finna. Via the service, you can order digitised images from the Finnish Labour Archives and provide feedback or suggest corrections to descriptive information. Paper photographs can be examined on site at the Finnish Labour Archives by separate agreement.

POSTER COLLECTION

The Finnish Labour Archives’ poster collection consists of posters from the social democratic labour movement, the workers’ movement and civic organisations. The largest entities are the shop posters of Kulutusosuuskuntien Keskusliitto, the posters of different trade unions and election posters. The collection also includes posters related to STS-pankki, civic organisations and the Spanish civil war, for example.

The poster collection includes an estimated ten thousand different themes, and a significant part of it has been digitised. Digitised posters can be viewed in Finna by searching for physical objects. Paper posters can be examined on site at the Finnish Labour Archives by separate agreement.
